Defensively, I thought Giroux had a good season and, in fact, sacrificed some points to play a responsible two-way game.
Bill, I felt that way this season about Giroux, but also several of the players on the team. It is one of the ways the system worked as a whole and also why the Flyers got away with icing the blue line that they did. It will be a treat to see what this team can do with an upgrade in skill throughout the lineup. |

Bill,
Thank you for your tireless work even in the off season.
I have been looking forward to a daily read. What can I say I am addicted to the Meltzer writing and need my daily fix. |

so....summing up Giroux....
The struggles of the power play weren't the main power play leaders fault...
The lack of scoring wasn't the main scorers fault....
The lack of leadership wasn't the main leaders fault....
and the "star" of the team, when struggling latched on to the new media darling for a little extra noticability....
Of behalf of the entire eastern conference...PLEASE hitch your wagon to #28 for the next 5 years...PLEASE |

I would have loved to have had Couts and MDZ for this series,
not sure the outcome would have been different, but we would have been a lot closer, and the special teams wouldn't have been as lopsided.
I did like how the coaches finally adjusted the PK, the last 3 games were a big improvement.
Bill, I love your point about the stay at home defenseman. I have all the respect in the world for the effort and heart that guys like Schultz gave all year and in this series. Really great job by all six D.
Still, when those guys are on the ice with G and Jake, the forwards are the ones who do most of the work, having to retrieve the puck and skate it up the ice. A lot more effort is spent in the D zone and moving it forward. When they do get set up offensively, the possession often dies when it goes back to the point. It takes a toll on guys like Giroux. They need more D that are truly two way players. A right handed two way D is my number one want, even more then a top six LW.
Hopefully soon. |

I know you are not this completely clueless. The point is the team is only as good as all the pieces. As a Buffalo fan you surely know this, as you have lived it all these years.
G is a great player, very much in his prime years. When he is on the ice with stay at home, marginal bottom pair D guys, his effectiveness is not going to be the same as when he is playing with guys with two way skills on the back end.
Why not try crediting the job Alzner and Carlson did on the Flyers top line. That is the real story. The Caps were better.

Backstrom's line was able to pretty much run roughshod in G's line. Not to say that's all on G, or all on the Backstrom, but it did seem like G's line struggled. |

If you say so...Flyers top line actually outchanced the Backstrom line until game 5 which was one of the most dominating possession performances ever |

We HAVE fixed it....we replaced Vanek (Giroux), Pomminville (Voracek), Stafford (Simmonds), and Tyler Myers (Gothesbiere) with Eichel, Reinhart, O'Reilly and Ristolenin. One more of season tweak and I see us in the ECF next year |

...yet he continues to prove it every post - YuenglingJagr
a very good troll though, probably wants us to doubt what G means to the team
Bill really makes the point. As good as any single player is (look at Tavares last night, what a performance, but he doesn't get it done without Boychuk and Hamonic and Griess and the Isles fab 4th line) it just does not happen unless the guy has support and skill from the entire line up. |

I love what the potential is in Buffalo. I am not arguing against your team at all.
The Flyers are rebuilding on a different path. To trade G and Jake and Simmonds now would be to commit to a 5-10 year rebuild.
I think if you want to point out that there is potential concern for the forwards to be aging as the young D prospects are on the team that is valid and worth discussing.
A counter argument would be it's easier to pick up and fill holes in the forward rank then to get top 4 D.
I think the Flyers could miss the playoffs and pick top ten next year almost more likely then them making the playoffs, especially if they move Streit/Schultz, Read and other vets to go with youth. There would be a set back short term I think.
But to dump G and Jake and Simmonds as you seem to advocate, well it just won't happen. Fans would not tolerate an outright tank and Hexy would never survive a ten year rebuild in Philly. |

That is a fairly good line you have. Backstrom OV. Not chopped liver. |

Giroux took two massive hits down the stretch when this team was trying to claw their way into the playoffs. Either one could and maybe should have put him on the shelf.
He may have missed a shift.
Blaming Giroux for showing up when he is injured, and playing at a higher level than 90% of the NHL is capable of when they are healthy...is stupid.
Giroux did everything he could physically with what he had left in the tank. He also did everything he could within the system he was installed in.
